Historic Tarboro starts the holiday season in style during its 5th five-day celebration of A Tar River Christmas. The annual North Carolina Symphony’s Holiday Pops Concert begins the festivities on Wednesday evening at Edgecombe Community College’s Tarboro campus with all-time favorites, a sing-along, and a visit from Santa. On Thursday, the action switches to Tarboro’s Main Street and Historic District as merchants offer extended shopping hours and the ever-popular carriage rides give a slow-motion view of store windows and holiday lights. Kids can do crafts and school groups carol on Courthouse Square with Santa in attendance! A special Holiday Market on Friday and Saturday offers a chance for more shopping and dining at downtown restaurants (breakfast with Santa at Classic Diner, special dining and wine features at On the Square, and craft beer and food trucks at Tarboro Brewing Company). On Sunday, visitors are invited to worship in one of Tarboro’s historic downtown churches before the 55th Annual Tarboro Christmas Parade steps off on Main Street at 2:00 pm. The Town Common reviewing stand and bleachers provide a great view along with other sites along Main Street’s business and residential parade route. The weekend closes out with an evening performance of Handel’s Messiah (Advent portions and Hallelujah Chorus) at historic Calvary Episcopal Church with local singers and a chamber orchestra.
